Method

How Solar PV Works?

When the sun shines onto a solar panel, energy from the sunlight is absorbed by the PV cells in the panel. This energy creates electrical charges that move in response to an internal electric field in the cell, causing electricity to flow.

Invention

Solar Cell Inventor

In 1883, New York inventor Charles Fritts created the first solar cell by coating selenium with a thin layer of gold. Fritts reported that the selenium module produced a current “that is continuous, constant, and of considerable force.” This cell achieved an energy conversion rate of 1 to 2 percent. The most modern solar cell works at an efficiency of 15 to 20 percent.

Invention

First Solar Panel

The array shown on the side was installed in 1884 and is considered the world’s first rooftop solar array that was installed by Charles Fritts in New York City. Today the dream of Charles Fritts has not only become a million-dollar industry that provides electricity to 840 million people. It is also the only hope for the future of a planet that urgently needs to change its energy model and replace it with a more sustainable one.
